What’s the story behind the magical and irresistible Paraiba Tourmaline? For those of you who have been following my work recently, you’ve learnt how much I love stones. I have a deep love for tourmalines and especially Paraiba Tourmalines. So it’s been an honor and a pleasure to create two rings with the said stone.
The sudden popularity of the stone can’t be denied as Beyonce was recently seen supporting an amazing Diamond, Emerald and Paraiba Tourmaline earring set designed by the famous Lorraine Schwartz. However the gemstone was just discovered in the late 1980s and are a relatively newcomer to the gemstone scene.
“The gems were first identified in the late 1980s by a prospector named Heitor Dimas Barbosa, at the Mina da Bathalha, in the state of Paraíba, Brazil. The Batalha’s mine is not operating any more.
The rarity of Paraiba Tourmalines - Paraiba Tourmalines are rare because they have, thus far, only been found in copper rich areas such as Brazil, Nigeria and Mozambique. Paraiba tourmalines from Brazil are among the rarest gems in the world.
The hand mining of Paraiba Tourmalines - In Brazil, the Paraiba tourmaline mines are hand excavated. Apart from that, Paraiba tourmalines in the rough can only be found in small veins that are as thin as pencils. Mining Paraiba stones is difficult; they are mined mostly by hand with manual tools like wedges and sledge hammers.” 1
How can you not fall in love with these stones? They are other-worldly, especially when they come included. There is a sense of fairydust and glitter within each luminous stone. A preciousness in their imperfections. A complete uniqueness. The reflection of the stars and how each star can be different and therefor be unique and special.
“Prices for this exotic newcomer—especially top quality in sizes between 3.00 and 5.00 carats—climbed rapidly to over $10,000 per carat. No tourmaline—even prized rubellite reds and chrome greens—had ever achieved such heights in value. Paraíba tourmaline’s rarity undoubtedly contributes to its high prices.” (GIA)
The Stones I’ve found with and work with are not the perfect specimens of Paraiba with the perfect gemmy consistency but I believe that creates allot more charm to these stones, especially when they are activated and contain rainbows.
How can’t you be in awe of these Gem Stars? Supposedly they were also a big hit at the Bangkok gemshow. this month. Fall in Love with Paraibas and ask me about them. I might have a few stones left if you dare dream to design something that would be out of this world and one'of-a kind. Learn about our custom design process here.
